WHAT?

DO!, the centre for entrepreneurship at Ghent University, yearly launches Expedition DO!, a unique 7-month pre-acceleration programme for entrepreneurial talent. The mission is to support and stimulate every Ghent University student and researcher to develop critical entrepreneurial skills to start, build and grow their business idea into a thriving venture.

What is more, for the winning teams the expedition leads to a world leading entrepreneurial conference.

Thanks to the help of an extensive network of experts and existing accelerator programmes in the industry your early idea will developped into a scalable business model. Our partners (see below) will be part of our expert, workshop and/or jury team throughout the track.

THE PROGRAMME

Expedition DO! is a 7-month programme consisting of monthly individual coaching sessions, 2 jam-packed bootcamps, expert mentoring and workshops on topics such as pitching, finance, IP, design thinking and so much more.

The programme focuses on innovative ideas that are situated in one of the following 4 categories:

  • sports & health
  • sustainability
  • food
  • tech


16 teams
will be selected to start the expedition in March. On Expedition DO! Final Destination Pitch Night on 7 October, 4 teams will be chosen from the remaining finalists. They win tickets to a world leading entrepreneurial conference, such as Slush. This is one of the biggest startup conferences in the world with over 20.000 startup’ers and investors in Helsinki, Finland. Check out their website for more information: https://www.slush.org/


If your team is selected as part of the 16 teams to start the expedition, there is a subscription fee of € 100 per person for the entire programme. This fee includes all events and weekends, sleeping arrangements during the first weekend, catering during activities, 1 Expedition DO! hoodie, expert advice / mentoring / coaching / keynote sessions, coworking facilities and course materials. For researchers participating in Expedition DO! until the Finalist Pre-selection Bootcamp, extra credits via Doctoral Schools may be obtained. More details will be given at the start of the expedition. In this case the general regulations of Doctoral Schools will apply.

FOR WHOM?

Any (team of) student(s) / researcher(s) at Ghent University that:

  • wants to validate an innovative idea and verify whether it is, or could be, market-ready
  • wants to explore the bigger potential of an existing business and scale it up

At least 1 team member should be a Ghent University student (with a minimum of 27 credits) or researcher. If you are graduating this academic year, you are still eligible to apply and partake in Expedition DO!

Large teams can enroll up to 3 (active) members in the programme.

If selected for Expedition DO!, it is expected that all team members who filled in the Individual Subscription take active part in the entire Expedition DO! programme.

APPLICATION PROCESS

The application forms below are a mandatory first step in the application process of Expedition DO! Please be as complete as possible.

Each team needs to fill out (deadline 1 March):

  • 1 Concept Subscription (about your idea)
  • an Individual Subscription per team member (with a maximum of 3 team members who can actively take part in the programme)

Part of the Individual Subscription is your Hunchup Test score. This test takes about 46 minutes to complete. It is possible to take the test at an earlier time than your subscription for Expedition DO!

The first selection round of the programme will be based on this online application part. DO! will review all applications thoroughly and will make a selection based on the following 5 criteria with regards to your business idea:

  • growth potential & scalability
  • team & mindset
  • ambition & drive
  • feasible revenue model
  • innovativeness

If you are selected for the second round, you will receive an invitation to an interview that gives you a chance to pitch your business idea in front of a jury. All participants will be notified whether or not they are selected for this round by 6 March.

The final selection of the teams joining Expedition DO! 2020 will be announced by the middle of March.

Important note: each person/team can only apply with 1 business idea. Submitting multiple business ideas will result in disqualification.

The timing of the 2020 track will be as follows (individual monthly coaching sessions still to be added):

  • 1 March: deadline applications
  • 10 March: Selection Pitches (back-up: 9 March)
  • 19 March: Welcoming Event
  • 27-29 March: Kickoff Bootcamp on location
  • 02 April, 23 April, 25 April & 07 May: workshops
  • 03 April, 24 April, 08 May: coworking @ The Foundry
  • 30 June: Summer Pitch & Community Event
  • 03 September: Progress Presentation
  • 19-20 September: Finalist Pre-selection Bootcamp
  • 07 October: Final Destination Pitch Night

At least 1 team member needs to be present during each event.
Consider the intensive Expedition DO! schedule a small step for you but a huge leap forward for your startup.
